Message from Interim Dean Jim Speta Regarding Shannon Bartlett

May 24, 2021

Dear Colleagues,

It is with both sadness and deep appreciation that I write today to share the news that Shannon Bartlett, associate dean of inclusion and engagement, will be leaving the Law School in mid-June. Shannon has accepted a position as National Geographic Society’s inaugural chief diversity, equity, and inclusion officer. A lifelong National Geographic magazine reader, this position represents for Shannon an exciting and once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work with an organization that helped spark the deep intellectual curiosity that characterizes her approach to both the law and diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Over the past few years, Shannon has worked tirelessly to create a diverse and inclusive community for all Law School constituents. Under her leadership, her office has significantly expanded DEI resources and programming and helped all departments create more equitable practices and policies. Shannon herself has provided support and guidance for countless students, staff, and faculty. The 2020-2021 Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Year in Review (pdf) offers a more comprehensive update on our DEI efforts, and we have Shannon to thank for greatly enhancing the Law School’s diversity, equity, and inclusion impact. I am profoundly and personally grateful to Shannon for her leadership and dedication, especially this year, and I know the Law School will continue the critical work of building an institution and community that reflects our values.

Please stay tuned for details on an upcoming search for a new associate dean. While we work to fill the role, Candace Bergeron, Susie, and the Student Services team remain available to support students. We will also be in touch soon regarding interim DEI leadership to ensure we continue to move forward our inclusion efforts and to curate programming and resources for our community.

Please join me in thanking Shannon once again for her leadership and congratulating her on this next opportunity.

Best,
Interim Dean Jim Speta
