Chicago Campus Commemorates King Day

The Northwestern University Chicago campus will celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 17, with an interdisciplinary panelist discussion on social justice followed by an evening lecture with Johnnetta Cole, President of Bennett College for Women.

Carlos Watson, CNN political contributor and host of "Off Topic with Carlos Watson," will moderate the panel discussion "Perspectives on Social Justice," which takes place at the School of Law, 357 E. Chicago Ave., in Thorne Auditorium at 11 a.m.

The discussion will focus on various perspectives about the agenda defined by civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s and opinions about future of the justice movement.

Panel members include Chuck Smith, Resident Director, Goodman Theatre; Terri Johnson, Vice President, Pubic Policy Reform and Advocacy, Human Relations Foundation, Jane Addams Hull House Foundation; Alysia Tate, Editor and Publisher, Chicago Reporter; Professor Larry Marshall, Legal Director, Center on Wrongful Convictions; and Dr. Ramona Rodriguez, Medical Director for Logan Square Health Center of Cook County Bureau of Health

The evening program will feature a dialogue with Johnnetta Cole, led by Carlos Watson, which will focus on whether the children of today are ready to launch the "next" civil rights movement. There will also be a video presentation by The HistoryMakers, a non-profit organization dedicated to archiving African American video oral histories. The evening event will take place in Thorne Auditorium at 6 p.m.

The Chicago campus celebrations are presented by the DREAM committee and sponsored by the School of Law and Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Both events are free and open to the public.
