CFJC Honors Community Volunteers

October 05, 2000

The Children & Family Justice Center and its Community Panels for Youth Project held a community volunteer recognition dinner Thursday, Oct. 5 at the Law School.

The Community Panels for Youth Project is a court-diversion program created by The Children and Family Justice Center, a holistic children's law center, clinical teaching program, and research and policy center, at Northwestern. The CPY project helps nonviolent juvenile offenders reenter their community as responsible citizens.

Volunteers honored have provided nonviolent juvenile offenders with a way to expand their skills and talents while diverting them from the temptations of the street. Representing the diversity of the area, the panelists address concerns of the minor and the victim and then make a contract with the youth to repair the community.

Thursday's dinner recognized the volunteers who participated in the Community Panels for Youth Project over the past year. Judge Sophia Hall and Alderman Walter Burnett of the 27th Ward spoke at the awards dinner. Dick Devine, Cook County States Attorney, and Sis. Cathy Ryan, Supervisor, Juvenile Justice Bureau, States Attorney's Office, as well as several members of their staff, also attended.
