Northwestern Law Partners with Chicago Firm on Diversity Scholarship

Northwestern University School of Law and the Chicago law firm of Butler Rubin Saltarelli & Boyd LLP announce a new scholarship program designed to assist diverse students financially and create employment opportunities for them during their law school careers.

The Butler Rubin Saltarelli & Boyd LLP Diversity Scholarship will award $10,000 to a first-year Northwestern Law student, with preference given to a diverse student, and is renewable for the second and third year of study. The scholarship recipient will also work at Butler Rubin as a summer associate after the first year and for at least two weeks after his or her second year. Students will be selected for the scholarship based on high levels of performance and achievement, a strong interest in the private practice of law in the area of business litigation, an intention to remain in the Chicago area following graduation from Northwestern, and outstanding interpersonal and communications skills.”

“As a boutique law firm committed to diversity, we see this scholarship program as a means of both assisting a diverse law student and adding to the depth and breadth of our firm's diversity efforts,” said Randi Ellias, partner in charge of diversity at Butler Rubin. “It's a win-win program for Northwestern University School of Law, Butler Rubin and a deserving law student.”

Butler Rubin will select one scholarship winner per year. Northwestern's Office of Diversity Education and Outreach will promote the scholarship program to the law school community and encourages all students to apply. Applications will be accepted through November 15, 2005 from first-year students for the 2005-06 school year.

Northwestern Law's unique approach to legal education begins an admissions process in which 75 percent of applicants are interviewed and more than 90 percent have significant post-college work experience. This year's incoming class is ranked 6th in the nation in terms of academic quality as measured by LSAT scores and GPAs. More than a third of entering students are ethnically and/or racially diverse, and more than two-thirds come from outside the Midwest, making for one of the most geographically diverse classes in the country.

Formed in 1980, Chicago-based Butler Rubin has established itself as a well-known litigation boutique assisting clients nationally and internationally in the core practice areas of reinsurance and general litigation, including antitrust matters and legacy liability issues.

Information about the firm and its diversity programs is available on its Web site at www.butlerrubin.com.
