Advanced Federal Jurisdiction

This course builds upon the foundation course in federal jurisdiction by examining certain topics in more depth and covering some new ones. Particular attention is given to topics that students are likely to encounter as either law clerks or practicing attorneys in the federal courts. Topics to be considered include the structure of federal courts; advanced issues with federal subject matter jurisdiction and the justiciability doctrines; the theory, limits, and application of the doctrine of stare decisis; habeas corpus; Section 1983 and qualified immunity; appellate procedure and review; and national security and the federal courts. Guest lecturers, including other judges, will occasionally contribute to our classroom discussions. Students will be required to complete two short papers (2-3 pages) during the semester and a final paper in the form a judicial opinion (with a majority and a dissent). Students will receive detailed feedback on their writing
