Clinic: Community Justice and Civil Rights Litigation
In this clinic, students will get first-hand experience working within social justice movements and in executing legal and policy strategies aimed at redressing some of the most pressing, urgent issues of our time-namely over-policing and mass imprisonment. Students will work directly with organizations involved in the recent uprisings and protests concerning institutional racism and policing and will also litigate cases related to the effect of COVID-19 on the prison system. Students will gain litigation experience and have client interaction—regardless of social distancing requirements—through video depositions and court hearings, legal calls with people in custody and online organizing meetings. Representative matters include: a class action lawsuit seeking the release of people in custody who are particularly vulnerable to COVID-19, enforcement of a federal court order aimed at transforming the Chicago Police Department, a jury trial related to a lethal police shooting and policy projects on jail and prison oversight, youth violence prevention and police accountability.
