Poverty Law

The class will introduce students to civil legal issues that impact people that live in poverty. Students will not learn how to serve clients in the covered areas, but will examine some of the more common types of cases that civil legal aid attorneys handle and the social context that creates the legal situations experienced by low-income people. The inextricable connection of race and poverty will be woven throughout the semester. The course will cover select and representative areas of law in a wide variety of legal areas such as public benefits, employment, child welfare, education, and housing and will highlight the often interrelated nature of the legal problems of the poor.
