Liberalism and Its Critics

Liberalism – the idea that the purpose of government is to guarantee to individuals the freedom to shape their own lives –is in retreat around the world today. The deepest challenge to liberalism is loss of faith in its institutions. The fall of the Soviet Union showed that a regime is vulnerable if its leaders no longer believe its guiding philosophy. Many prominent writers, on left and right - authoritarian, communitarian, nationalist, anticolonialist, Marxist, populist, and religious - are proposing alternatives. This class will examine those writers.
