IT Graduation Checklist

Transition Overview

The checklist will guide you through what you need to do and when.

Access to Services

We know many of you are wondering: What services will I still be able to access after graduation?

Northwestern Pritzker Law email, OneNote, OneDrive, Teams, and Office 365 will continue for approximately 5 months after graduation when your NetID expires. Later this summer, you will have the opportunity to move to an alumni account offering similar email and storage features.

Canvas access will also continue until your NetID expires, though course materials may be removed as instructors see fit. Remember to download any materials you may need before the end of the quarter.

May to June Timeframe

Download software. Once you have graduated, you will no longer have access to the software sites. If you wish to download your installation files or purchase any new software, visit the Northwestern software site before you graduate.

Save email messages you want to keep. All emails, contacts, calendar appointments, and tasks are deleted from the Northwestern email servers when your NetID is deactivated. Once deleted, the data is non-recoverable. You can find information and instructions to export and import your email, contacts, and calendar on the Microsoft website. Please note that you should be selecting the applicable link under "Export from Outlook app".

Save course materials/Canvas files. While you will still be able to access Canvas until your NetID expires, your instructors may remove access to your course materials at the end of the quarter. Before the end of the quarter, download any course materials you wish to keep from Canvas.

Save important Northwestern Pritzker Law files. If you use any data storage service that requires that you log in with your NetID, access will expire when your NetID expires. Your NetID will remain active for about 5 months after graduation, but to ensure you don’t lose anything important, we recommend that you download your Northwestern Pritzker Law files from OneNote and OneDrive before graduation.

Back up your computer. It is always a good idea to make sure that you have your personal data backed up in the event something goes wrong with your computer's hard drive. There are many methods of backing up, and you can use one or more of copying files to personal cloud storage accounts, TimeMachine for Apple Computers, or paid services such as:

Change your password if you have not changed it in the last 6 months.

Mid-July

Add/Update your profile in Our Northwestern with your current (post-graduation) contact information.

For questions about your Alumni Network, please contact the Northwestern Pritzker Law Alumni Relations team at law-alumni@law.northwestern.edu or (312) 503-7609.

Optional: purchase your own Office 365 subscription & migrate OneDrive data. Your subscription to Office 365 through Northwestern Pritzker Law will expire with your NetID expiration. If you wish to continue using Office after your NetID expires, you will need to purchase a new subscription using a non-Northwestern Pritzker Law email address and migrate whatever data you wish to keep from OneDrive before your NetID expires.

Mid-July to August

Activate your Northwestern Pritzker Law alumni email account. You can request a Northwestern Pritzker Law-branded Northwestern alumni email account (example: Law-alum@law.northwestern.edu).

Please note that access to your Northwestern Pritzker Law student email account will expire approximately 5 months after graduation when your NetID expires.  Please review the information on this page on how to archive any student emails that you wish to keep.

August

Archive your Northwestern Pritzker Law student emails. Once you graduate, your NetID is considered expired and begins to go through the process of deactivation. You should receive your first notification of pending NetID deactivation approximately four months after graduation. If you haven't archived your emails by this time, you have approximately a month to do so before your email account is no longer accessible.

Back up your notes in OneNote. Your subscription to Office 365 through Northwestern Pritzker Law will expire with your NetID expiration. Back up your notes manually following these steps.

Optional: purchase your own Office 365 subscription & migrate OneDrive data. Your subscription to Office 365 through Northwestern Pritzker Law will expire with your NetID expiration.  If you wish to continue using Office, you will need to purchase a new subscription using a non-Northwestern Pritzker Law email address and migrate whatever data you wish to keep from OneDrive if you haven't done so already.

September

Archive your Northwestern Pritzker Law student emails before your account is removed. Approximately 5 months after graduation, your password is scrambled and you are no longer able to access email or any other university resources; your NetID is removed from Northwestern systems. If you already archived your email and set up your alumni account, you can skip this step.
