December 02, 2005

A memorial service for Harold Shapiro, a Northwestern Law adjunct professor and partner at Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal, will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 8, in Thorne Auditorium at the Law School.

Harold, who graduated from Northwestern Law in 1952, passed away Dec. 1 at the age of 78. He was an amazing man who did so much with elegance and grace. He will be missed by many in the Northwestern Law community.

While a Northwestern Law student, Harold served as Editor-in-Chief of the Law Review and received the Wigmore Key, an honor for the graduate who did the most to help preserve the traditions of the Law School.

Since 1959, he had been an adjunct professor at Northwestern Law, teaching courses in Conflicts, International Law, and International Litigation and Arbitration. He recently spent time working with students and faculty, including Professor Emerita Dawn Clark Netsch a fellow graduate of the class of 1952, on the 100th Anniversary issue of the Law Review. He was also a Life Member of the Law Board.

Harold was an attorney at Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal for nearly 53 years, 47 of them as a partner. His contributions to the firm were countless, including serving as the firm's first chairman from 1985 to 1990. Harold will be remembered as a devoted educator, civic leader, and humanitarian.

He is survived by his wife, Beatrice; his children, Matthew, Michael, and Nicholas; and his grandchildren, Daniel, Martin, and Sarah.

Harold's family requests that contributions in his memory be made to Northwestern University School of Law, 357 E. Chicago Avenue, Chicago, IL 60611. If you choose to make a contribution, please specify that it is in memory of Harold D. Shapiro.
