American Society of International Law Awards Associate Professor Annelise Riles for Her Book The Network Inside Out

Associate Professor Annelise Riles' book The Network Inside Out was selected by the American Society of International Law as "a work of great distinction." The Society awarded Professor Riles a Certificate of Merit to recognize her great work. The award was announced at a recent business meeting of the Society, as well as at the Annual Dinner during the Annual Meeting.

The Network Inside Out is a study of the aesthetics of "networks" and other artifacts of institutional life, such as documents, funding proposals, newsletters, or organizational charts. Professor Riles analyzed Fijian bureaucrats and activists preparing for and participating in the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women in 1995.

Professor Riles is a specialist in comparative and international law and the law of the East Asian and Pacific region. Her research focuses on the cultural foundations of legality and how the law manages cultural differences in a wide variety of settings, from United Nations bureaucracies to derivatives markets. She teaches Comparative Law, Conflict of Laws, Futures Markets Regulation and holds a joint appointment with the American Bar Foundation.
